The best pastime ever growing up in the 80’s.

I am so excited to go home today and wrap a present and give it. I had been waiting for this present since last week. It is for my seventeen year old daughter. She really wanted these! When she told me she wanted these I bubbled with joy and anticipation. This was probably the best thing I owned when I was a kid. She is not a kid, but I don’t care. If she wants these, I’m giving them. I remember slidding these on my feet when I was maybe ten? My cousin would come over and she would bring her pair. We would cover the basement lightbulb with a red bucket to get the lighting effect. We would put on the record “Xanadu” by Olivia Newtown John, and we would Rollerskate! Around and around the basement, around the center chimney, on the concrete floor. We would sing and skate our hearts out! Our parents must have loved how much time we spent rollerskating. It was our passion. When my daughter asked for a pair a couple weeks ago for her birthday I thought I would have to dig deep to find a pair. It turns out there are some awesome, professional companies that specialize in roller skates these days. This was the pair I ordered for her. https://impalarollerskates.com/collections/roller-skates/products/impala-quad-skate-sky-blueyellow?variant=32170322362462 She wanted this blue color. Now I can’t wait to go home and wrap them. The box they came in is so cool! Best of all, they come with all the excitement I had when I was a kid.

I've enjoyed writing since the first grade, since my aunt gave me a journal so long ago to write in. Now I write to enjoy the moments. I write to stretch and share my thoughts. I write to connect and find calm. Raising three kids, three rabbits and two cats, with a school social work career, I need the daily refuge writing offers. The simple reflections allow for an abundance of memories to the hurried pace of life.

  1. Oh, rollerskating in the basement! I am with you. There was just something about those painted concrete floors that worked perfectly with the skates. Love the detail you shared about the red bucket–so funny and so true!

  2. I loved roller skating when I was an 80’s kid! Every Wednesday there was a “Roller Disco” at the local rec centre and it was the highlight of my week. We listened to a lot of ABBA as we skated. Thanks for the memories!

  3. I went rollerskating at the rink every Friday night when I was in middle school. I would rollerskate in my driveway, too. Your post brought back so many memories at the rink. I hope she enjoys them as much as we did.

  4. Wow! You brought back memories for me! I went roller skating every Saturday night. I remember the first boy who asked me to “couples skate” (Nicky- no idea his last name). You should get a pair for yourself and skate with her. This was a fun slice to read and I feel your excitement about giving this gift.
